TUESDAY, 10:30 to 11:30 A.M. | MILL RACE CENTER, ART ROOM
Presenter: Melissa Cannon
Melissa Cannon spent the last several years of her Ph.D program focusing on senior centers in the Portland metropolitan area in Oregon.
She gained first-hand experience through a one-year internship at a senior center as part of the requirements for her Graduate Certificate in Gerontology, and has just completed her dissertation, titled “Challenges, Experiences, and Future Directions of Senior Centers Serving the Portland Metropolitan Area,” to fulfill the requirements of her Urban Studies doctoral program.
This presentation elucidates ways that staff at two senior centers in a qualitative study in Portland, Oregon work to address and accommodate their participants who face poverty, homelessness, and/or mental illness.
Specific examples will be provided of resources that allowed staff to create inclusiveness and accessibility within their centers’ programming.
