Through the Summerville Fellowship with the Pitman Institute for Aging Well at Mill Race Center, Total Brain Health programs are being implemented and led throughout 2017 and 2018 by Summerville Fellow Calli McNicholas.
The Total Brain Health program was developed by Dr. Cynthia Green. Dr. Green is a clinical psychologist, author, and one of America’s foremost experts on brain health. Dr. Green has spent over twenty years developing programs for cognitive wellbeing that are grounded in science, utilize strategies that work, and incorporate evidence based techniques. The first Total Brain Health program to be offered at Mill Race Center will be Total Brain Health Memory. Total Brain Health Memory is a robust, hands-on course that teaches active adults how to improve memory performance.
The first offering of Total Brain Health Memory was made available to Mill Race Center members and community members this past summer. Individuals who participated in Total Brain Health Memory this summer reported positive and promising outcomes. For example:
- 100% of participants reported that their knowledge about brain health was increased by participating in the program.
- 100% of participants stated that the program gave them a chance to try several new, brain health activities.
- 100% of participants also stated that the Total Brain Health Memory program created a new opportunity to socialize and meet new people.
- Furthermore, 89% of participants strongly agreed and 11% agreed to make brain health choices a part of their routine.
- And finally, participants expressed that they would be interested in participating in another more challenging Total Brain Health program, if offered.
In addition to positive outcomes, interest in Total Brain Health continues to grow. To accommodate this growing interest courses continue to be offered. Upcoming course offerings are listed below, to register contact the Mill Race Center Business Office at (812)-376-9241. Scholarships for Total Brain Health programs are available upon request.

Hi, my name is Calli McNicholas and I am currently studying to become a Mental Health Counselor at Indiana University Purdue University – Columbus. I graduated from Indiana University in 2016 from the School of Public Health. As I am on my journey to becoming a counselor, who I am professionally is evolving. During my time here at the Mill Race Center I have grown in numerous ways and have had unforgettable experiences. Co-leading Dr. Cynthia Green’s Total Brain Health Memory program has been a great experience. Being taught about brain health by Dr. Green, and gaining the insights from the members in the classes has led to personal and professional growth. Through this process I have gained a lot of knowledge and I will continue to learn from each class that I am able to lead. As time goes on, I look forward to continuing my growth through new experiences with the members of the Mill Race Center.
